To say Alan X is a pro would be an understatement. Because as a veteran of the industry, this man knows porn inside and out. As a result, Alan has worked with many top stars including Alina Lopez, Alix Lynx, Freya Parker, Whitney Wright, and so many more. Furthermore, his work does a great job of showcasing their talents on screen for our enjoyment.
However, it’s hard to know what’s going on behind the scenes when watching porn. So this is why I love interviews like these – where I get the chance to chat with a maestro of the craft. So cuddle up and settle in for a true behind the scenes convo where we get personal and deep.
Hi Alan! Let’s start with the basics, so please tell me a bit about yourself. Firstly, where are you from? Secondly, what’s your favorite thing about where you’re from?
I grew up in Boston, MA. I moved out to Los Angeles in 2003 to get into the adult film industry. Boston is a great town, and I encourage everyone to visit. It’s got lots of history and culture. Plus, New England is beautiful, especially in the fall.
New England is gorgeous in the fall. But now to get to the meat of the interview. So how did you get into the industry?
I started as a Boxcover artist for Jill Kelly Productions back in 2003. Then I worked for a couple of years doing graphic design for DVD and VHS cover art. I enjoyed it, but I really wanted to work inset. So when JKP shut its doors, I got an assisting job with our Boxcover photographer Brett Bereny who was doing magazine layouts for Penthouse. The executives at Penthouse liked me so eventually, I graduated to shoot on set stills during movie productions for them. I did that job for about 10 years for almost every company before I started directing my own films around 2012.

Since I was a stills photographer for so long, I’ve shot for pretty much almost every major studio in porn at one point or another in my career. I have only directed for a handful of companies: Vivid, Wicked, Gamma, JJV, Spizoo & Let’s Doe It, but I’m taking in new clients all the time.
Certainly, all these sites are great. But what’s your most memorable shooting experience?
That’s hard to say because there have been so many! Any day shooting on set with good people and getting to do something cool and creative is a good day in my book.
That’s awesome. Have you got an eye out for any upcoming stars?
Casting is such an important aspect of what I do. I have been around long enough to see a lot of the girls who are big stars now at their start. Some girls hit the ground running on their first day as Alina Lopez did, and for some girls, it takes a while… but they get there.
Since my scenes involve so much dialogue and acting, it’s hard for new girls sometimes, even ones who go on later to become big stars. Porn is a skill that is learned over time. Experience matters. That’s why I usually pair experienced girls with new girls, and as those new girls get more experienced, then I pair them with new girls. It’s a system I have been using for years, and it ensures that all the content comes out good because there is at least one experienced model on set.
It’s great getting this insight from such a pro. So how has the industry has changed in the last couple of years?
Well, the biggest change has been the rise of Onlyfans which set off the self shot/self produced Indie content revolution. The lockdown paralyzed mainstream porn shoots but it gave the models the time and motivation to figure out how to shoot content themselves and sell it directly to their fans. This had never been done before without some sort of webmaster or intermediary between the girl and the fans. Now, suddenly the girls had a way to sell the content of themselves directly to fans without needing to go through the production companies.
This was a new and honestly very progressive situation for the industry, and the fans rightly gravitated towards it. Suddenly it wasn’t about the quality of the content or hitting this month’s trending fetishes or keywords. It was about performers making content directly for their fans with their cell phones. Nobody seemed to care about the quality. Nobody seemed to care that you couldn’t see the hardcore or the entire scene was shot by a camera on a tripod that never moves. The fans were intoxicated that they could see directly into the performer’s personal sex lives. Like getting the secret dirty videos off a hot girl’s phone.
It took a while for the film crews and directors to adjust to this new reality. Still, soon, enterprising models started hiring their favorite make up artists, cameramen, editors and photographers to produce more and more polished content for their fans. Now collaboration is going on in both directions, with people getting together to make high-end productions together, and many of the people involved are participating for a copy of the content instead of cash payment.
It’s an idea whose time has come, and I’m glad I was here to see it all happen. Things were the same for a long, long time around here and then suddenly, in the last few years, things have gotten very, very interesting. I’m looking forward to seeing what the future holds.
Above all things, the rise of OnlyFans shook up the industry. It’s crazy. Still, I have to ask what’s it like having the best job in the world?
I wouldn’t say I have the best job in the world. There are plenty of other people who love what they do and make a difference in this world, and what I do certainly isn’t any better than any of them. That being said, I like my job. I’ve long since been desensitized to the sex happening around me since it does not and never will involve me directly. In that regard, it’s just a job like any other. Moving heavy lights and pelican cases around. Shooting until late. Packing up when you’re tired. Stuff like that.
It’s all worth it, though, because I enjoy a lot of aspects of my job. The part I enjoy most is meeting and collaborating with interesting and creative people. I appreciate all the friendships I have made in this industry and all the great days we have had together on set over the years. I even appreciate the long, difficult ones because they built character and resilience.
Fans will never know how difficult it can be and how long it can take to make some of the scenes they have enjoyed over the years. Nor should they. When I’m enjoying a mainstream film for 2 hours, I don’t need to detract from that experience by pondering how long it took to film or how smooth it went. None of that matters, only the result matters, and I often remind people of that onset.
